Compass Homes was born from a bold vision to create beautifully designed, detail-focused homes that truly fit the way families live. Our journey building custom luxury homes in Central Ohio began in 2000. And we are proud that twenty-five years later, our vision remains focused and is represented by hundreds of homes throughout Central Ohio.
As we celebrate 25 years, we’re pausing to reflect on how far we’ve come, what we’ve learned, and what continues to guide us. From the beginning, our founder, Mark Braunsdorf, has been driven by a passion for building that started at just three years old.

It All Started with a Blueprint…and a Big Idea
From our very first home, built in Westerville, we’ve stayed committed to thoughtful design and are intentional in learning something from every home we build. Each project has added to our knowledge base and helped us refine a process that balances high-end luxury, modern livability, efficiency, and aesthetic detail.
Take our Eastcleft home under construction, for example. This is a home, or rather floorplan we’ve now built over 23 times; each version is fine-tuned yet unique from what came before it. The blueprint begins with a square and is modified, enlarged, and morphed into its own unique design.
That evolution comes from the same mindset Mark had when he first read Builder Magazine during the Savings and Loan crisis in the early 90s, studying how builders survive and thrive. That’s when he learned, “A square is more efficient than a rectangle.” The idea of homes as functional, elegant Rubik’s Cubes took shape — and the result has been smarter, more adaptable living spaces ever since.

We’ve been honored with many awards from the BIA and Parade of Homes, but it’s the people behind Compass Homes that set us apart.

What’s Stayed the Same – and What’s Evolved
As we look back, some things haven’t changed:

But we’ve also grown.
Our process has matured with time — becoming more efficient, more collaborative, and more creative. And while our online footprint was nearly nonexistent at the start, it’s grown steadily alongside our build process. We’ve become more visible, more connected, and more accessible to the Central Ohio community, while staying true to the values that started it all.
Looking Ahead: Building for the Next 25 Years
